Curious About Online Therapy? Let’s Dive In!

What is Online Counselling?

Online counselling is a mental health support delivered through digital communication platform.

It requires an internet-connected device on both the therapist’s and the client’s side, such as a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

Sessions can take place via video conferencing platforms, mobile apps, text messages, or email.

You can access online counselling as long as you have an internet-connected device and a quiet, confidential space.

Is Online Counselling Private and Confidential?

Yes, absolutely, but only when using secure, privacy-compliant platforms.

For an online session to be confidential, it requires the use of a secure and data privacy-compliant platform and tools. Most of the common applications for video conference calls, messaging or emails are not privacy-oriented or confidential.

It is also essential that the counsellor has clear procedures in place about how to proceed in case of unforeseen technical difficulties.

The use of headphones helps ensure sound quality and adds an extra layer of privacy on your end.

At Fly Out of the Box I use a worldwide secure and GPD-compliant virtual platform, I have clear procedures in place not only for unforeseen technical difficulties but also for reschedules, cancellations, payments and communications. all designed to protect your privacy and ensure a smooth, professional experience. You can read more in my service policy.

Is Online Counselling Effective?

Online therapy is as effective as in-person sessions, especially when delivered by experienced professionals using the right tools and approach.

It might not suit everyone, but it can be ideal for people managing anxiety, living with mobility challenges, travelling frequently, or adjusting to life in a new city or country. Online therapy offers the flexibility to stay consistent with sessions, which makes it more likely that people complete the process and see lasting results.

Its effectiveness depends not just on the tech, but on how it’s used. Training, experience, creativity and support all play a key role. What makes the real difference is knowing how to adapt to the unique possibilities and limitations of working online.

At Fly Out of the Box, I’ve offered online therapy since 2015, combining up-to-date training with creative strategies and professional experience to help clients get the most out of the process.

Who is not Suitable for Online Counselling?

Online counselling is not suitable:

  • If you struggle with technology. Let’s clarify it is not necessary to be a tech expert, being a tech user comfortable using a computer or phone is enough.

  • If you are in a mental health crisis or at risk of harm

  • If you are hallucinations, paranoia, delusions or suicidal thoughts

  • If you are dealing with a complex psychiatric condition or severe addiction

In the situations above, in-person therapy is recommended as the safer choice, with online therapy used as support or reinforcement.

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Counselling?

Advantages of Online Counselling:

  • Convenience: You can access therapy from your home, office, or favourite quiet spot.

  • Flexibility: Easy to schedule around work, travel, or family life.

  • Long-distance support: Keep working with your therapist even if you relocate or travel constantly.

  • Therapeutic intimacy: Being in a familiar space often helps clients open up faster.

Disadvantages of Online Counselling

  • Tech reliability: Sessions can be disrupted by poor internet or platform issues.

  • Less nonverbal communication: Important cues may be harder to notice on screen.

  • Not suitable for every situation: In-person therapy is better for crisis, severe psychiatric issues, or active addiction.

At Fly Out of the Box, I provide clear, upfront information about the limitations of online counselling, along with service terms and fees. This helps you make informed decisions and take advantage of the flexibility online therapy offers without compromising on safety or confidentiality. Risks are minimised through well-defined procedures and professional support. For more details, please check the FAQ section.

Is Online Counselling Good for Anxiety?

Yes. Research shows that online counselling for anxiety is as effective as in-person therapy. It can be especially helpful for people struggling with agoraphobia, panic attacks or health-related anxiety, where leaving home or commuting can feel overwhelming.

People who travel frequently or who are adjusting to life in a new city or country can also benefit. Online therapy allows you to stay connected with a therapist you trust, no matter where you are, without interrupting your progress.

At Fly Out of the Box I offer consistent, flexible and tailored support. My approach is direct and grounded, no sugar-coating, just honest professional guidance to help ease your mind from the very first session.

Is Online Therapy Good for Trauma?

Yes. Research shows that EMDR and CBT are among the most effective treatments for trauma. EMDR and CBT online have been proven as effective as in-person. Online counselling for trauma can offer an added layer of privacy, consistency and safety by making therapy more accessible and supporting long-term progress.

At Fly Out of the Box I offer trauma therapy online using a tailored blend of EMDR, CBT and positive psychology, designed to minimise suffering and maximise results.
