Understanding EMDR Therapy: Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Explained
Understanding EMDR and What It’s Like to Work Together
How does EMDR work?
EMDR helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they no longer feel like a current threat.
EMDR therapy uses bilateral stimulation such as eye movements, sounds or tapping to activate both sides of the brain. This process mirrors what naturally happens during REM sleep when the brain processes experiences and emotions.
During trauma or overwhelming events, the brain's usual processing can become stuck. The memory may be stored in a fragmented, emotional form that feels frozen in time and disconnected from language, logic or perspective. This can leave the nervous system in a constant state of alert, reacting to everyday situations as if the danger is still present.
EMDR supports the brain in doing what it could not do at the time. By rhythmically engaging both hemispheres, it helps reduce the emotional intensity of distressing memories, calms overactive threat responses and strengthens new, healthier neural connections.
With time and repeated processing, these memories begin to feel more distant. They become part of your story rather than something that continues to shape your reactions in the present. You may still remember what happened, but it no longer feels overwhelming.
How bilateral brain stimulation helps reprocess trauma, reduce emotional triggers, and restore balance through EMDR.
Is online EMDR effective?
Yes, studies show that online EMDR is just as effective as in-person therapy.
Recent research confirms that online EMDR is equally effective as face-to-face EMDR for treating PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other trauma-related issues. For many clients, virtual EMDR can even offer better outcomes, especially for those who feel too anxious to leave home, frequently travel, or find the therapist’s office itself triggering.
Since EMDR can be delivered from the comfort of your home, office, or even a hotel room (as long as there’s a stable internet connection), it provides flexible access to trauma therapy in a way that suits your life.
Online EMDR Intensives are also ideal for clients with demanding schedules who find it difficult to attend weekly sessions. These intensives are delivered over one to five consecutive days, offering deeper, uninterrupted work in a shorter time frame.

What is EMDR intensive therapy?
EMDR intensives offered online provide the same therapeutic impact as traditional therapy, but in a highly focused, time-efficient format. It’s a deep-dive approach to healing that fits into demanding schedules and delivers faster results. Instead of spreading sessions out weekly, you’ll complete up to 7 hours of therapy in a single day. This allows for rapid emotional processing, so you can return your focus to your career and creativity without the ongoing time investment of long-term therapy. Many compare it to a “therapy bootcamp” for its speed and depth.
This format is especially effective for professionals, remote workers, tech industry employees, and creatives who need flexibility and efficiency. As long as you have a private space and stable internet, you can engage in transformative work from wherever you are.
How many EMDR sessions will I need?
The number of EMDR sessions you’ll need depends on your individual goals and the format you choose. That’s exactly what the online intake session helps determine. We’ll explore what you want to work through, what outcomes you're aiming for, and whether a standard hourly session or a more immersive intensive is the right fit.
Intensives range from a half-day to five consecutive days, allowing for flexible, customized support based on the depth and urgency of your needs.
How do I schedule an intensive?
Scheduling an EMDR Intensive is simple and starts with a 1 hour online session. You can book it directly here to begin your treatment process right away.
During this initial session, we’ll explore your personal history and clarify what you want to work on and achieve. Based on your goals and unique circumstances, I will then recommend the ideal length for your intensive therapy. Afterward, we’ll set dates for your intensive sessions (Intake, Intensive work, and follow-up).
To confirm your booking, a 50% deposit is required.
How do I get my video-call link?
Once you book your session, you’ll receive a secure video-call link via email as part of your booking confirmation. Fly Out of the Box sessions are host on a secure, privacy-compliant platform. To make things easier, the link will also be sent again in a reminder email 24 hours before your scheduled session.
Can I change my appointment?
Yes, you can reschedule, within the appropriate timeframes for each type of session.
Intake Sessions can be rescheduled up to 72 hours in advance. This gives everyone enough time to adjust and ensures the process stays smooth and respectful for all involved. Life happens, and it’s important that we each have space to respond to the unexpected.
EMDR Online Intensives, due to the time and preparation involved, can only be rescheduled with at least 30 days’ notice.
For full details, please refer to the Service Policy here.
What if I need to cancel?
If something unexpected comes up and you can’t attend, there are flexible options depending on your session type.
Online intake sessions can be rescheduled with at least 72 hours’ notice, but please note they are non-refundable and cannot be canceled.
For EMDR Online Intensives, cancellations are allowed up to 30 days before your scheduled start date. A 10% fee will be deducted from your deposit to cover administrative costs.
